Spravato® (esketamine) Treatment at MHPNE
A New Path Toward Relief from Depression
At Mental Health Professionals of New England (MHPNE), we understand how challenging it can be when depression does not respond to traditional treatments.
That’s why we offer Spravato® — an FDA-approved therapy designed to help people find relief when other antidepressants have not worked.
Our clinical team provides expert, compassionate care in a safe and supportive environment, helping you move toward lasting recovery.
Overview
Spravato® is an FDA-approved, life-changing treatment specifically designed for treatment-resistant depression (after two or more unsuccessful antidepressant trials) and for major depressive disorder (MDD) with active suicidal thoughts. Administered as a prescription nasal spray under the supervision of certified clinical staff, Spravato® offers rapid relief for adults 18 years and older who have not responded to traditional antidepressants (SSRIs or SNRIs), which target monoaminergic neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.
As the only FDA-approved monotherapy for treatment-resistant depression, Spravato® represents a major advancement in the treatment of depression.
At MHPNE, we distinguish our care by having every Spravato® session monitored exclusively by Registered Nurses—not medical assistants—alongside experienced Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs). Our administration protocol combines cutting-edge pharmacology with compassionate, supportive care, providing new hope and meaningful relief for individuals struggling with depression.
🧠 How Spravato® Works
Spravato® is believed to work by targeting the brain’s glutamate system, specifically by blocking NMDA receptors. This process helps activate and strengthen communication between brain cells, promoting the growth of new neural connections. As these new pathways form, the brain can develop healthier, more positive thinking patterns. The glutamate system represents one of the most promising areas of research for new and innovative treatments for mental health conditions.
Spravato® was designed for adults who need rapid relief from suicidal thoughts or for those who have not responded to traditional antidepressants. Because it is administered as a nasal spray, Spravato® is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream—bypassing the digestive system—and can begin to provide relief within hours rather than weeks, helping patients feel improvement much sooner.
Spravato® works in a way that is similar to ketamine, but it binds more effectively to NMDA receptors, enhancing neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections. By influencing areas of the brain involved in mood regulation and emotional balance, Spravato® supports both short-term relief and long-term recovery from depression.
